My theoretical approach to supervision is integrative with emphasis on providing a confidential, supportive and encouraging environment for you to review client work and reflect on your practice. I’m broadly influenced by the Inskipp & Proctor model and value plenty of flexibility and creativity to keep things fresh. I work in accordance with the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) Ethical Framework.
Ethos…
Over the years I’ve found it helpful to outline my ethos/approach towards my work as a supervisor. This can help you to get a sense of whether you would like to see me. Deliberately short, and so doomed to appear lightweight on paper, it does come after much thought!
My own approach to practice is integrative, but from a highly person-centred stance. I would say I place an emphasis on deep relationship building and with the broad principles of ‘attachment theory’ in mind, so I tend to think in this way when considering my own client base (although I have supervisees from several modalities). I view supervision as a chance for two therapists to come together and talk – each will have strengths, good knowledge, and (at least speaking for me!) the occasional blind-spot. A good supervision session is really one where both people can learn from eachother and, for supervisees, is a chance to bounce ideas off of another peer and get some support in the tricky endeavour of helping others.
My aim is that relationships within supervision are as free as possible from a sense of restriction or unnecessary boundaries. The below ‘Practical’ section is therefore intended to cover only things that are necessary to make sure we have shared expectations/understandings should we go ahead.
Practical…
- Communications: We will do our best to be prompt with communications together (email/messages/calls etc) when sorting out logistics (meeting times/changes etc). Email is usually best if time permits as those rare diary mistakes more often come from seeing a text message when ‘out of position’ and not updating the diary accordingly!
- Online/Telephone work: I ask that supervisees call me directly at appointment time, I will be ready. I would typically only call out if agreed beforehand or if an urgent situation is at hand. The rationale for this - a) I believe it’s important for all people to be free to choose if they attend sessions without a sense of being pressured, and b) having this general rule of thumb means it is very clear how we will come together each time we meet. Online work can be offered via: WhatsApp Video (preferred as usually easiest), Microsoft Teams. Some supervisees have other preferences (Zoom etc), and this is fine. You'd just need to make sure you send me the link.
- Timings: Should I not hear from a supervisee 15 minutes past the start of a scheduled supervision session (by email/message/call), I reserve the right to consider the supervision session ‘cancelled’ (and would likely email to check all is ok). If we go ahead then our time will be shorter.
- Cancellations: Cancellation fee is full supervision session fee. Although we should always try to stick with supervision commitments, things of course do come up. My policy:
- Supervision sessions cancelled 48 hours or more before our agreed time incur no cancellation charge.
- Sessions cancelled within 48 hours of the agreed time are charged at the full supervision fee.
- Supervision time is reserved specifically for you, and late cancellations are difficult to reallocate. For this reason, the session fee remains payable in line with our usual payment arrangements.
- I recognise that unexpected circumstances do occasionally arise. If there are genuinely exceptional situations, I’m open to discussing these with you.
- Issues outside of supervision sessions / emergencies: The best way of making urgent contact is to call or text, but I do check emails frequently. Meeting for an additional session is sometimes best if complex issues have come up, and I might suggest we arrange a set time to talk things through. I will always make myself available at the first opportunity if there are urgent issues.
