Code of Ethics & Theoretical Approach
· As a Counselling Supervisor, I work in accordance with the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) Ethical Framework.
· My core theoretical approaches are PC and Integrative, with a client-centred approach to supervision akin to the Inskipp and Proctor model of clinical supervision. I try to make sure supervision sessions are open, engaging and safe spaces to reflect on your practice and the challenges of our work as therapists.
Agreement
· Supervision will take place in accordance with the BACP guidelines: Trainees require supervision @ 4:1 ratio for the first 50 client hours and thereafter @ 6:1 ratio. Qualified counsellors are required to undertake a minimum of 1.5 hours supervision per month. If counsellors would like to see me for 'top up' supervision alongside another supervisor then it is the counsellors responsibility to ensure his/her supervision meets the BACP guidelines and I operate on the basis of trust that this is done.
· Group supervision: A two hour group with up to four supervisees. Each supervisee may attribute one hour of supervision towards their required quota in line with the BACP and/or training requirement. Five or more supervisees will only be able to attribute a direct division of the group time.
· Supervision will be reviewed regularly. It is understood by both Supervisor and Supervisee that if either feels it would be in the Supervisee’s or clients' best interests to bring the supervision agreement to an end then this will be discussed and agreed.
· If either the Supervisor or Supervisee wishes to end the agreement the following notice periods should be observed: two months from the Supervisor or one month from the Supervisee.
· If the Supervisee arrives late the Supervisor reserves the right not to extend the end of the session.
· If the Supervisor feels that additional supervision might be helpful to the Supervisee this will be discussed.
· Please give your Supervisor a minimum of 24-hour notice if you are unable to attend.
· Please give one month’s notice of annual leave.
Confidentiality
· The BACP Ethical Framework is followed in terms of confidentiality. If the Supervisor has concerns regarding a Supervisee’s work he/she will raise these in the supervision session. In serious situations, the Supervisor will inform the BACP and his/her supervisor after private discussions with the Supervisee. Any actions taken will be in the best interest of the client.
· The Supervisor works under the BACP Ethical Framework and undertakes consultative supervision in respect of all Supervisees’ work. All reference to clients is anonymous including any notes made by the Supervisor used as an aid in supervision sessions. If it is felt that advice or support from external organisations might be helpful for the client this will be discussed with the Supervisee.
· The Supervisor will endeavour to be aware of contracts in which the Supervisee operates i.e. college or university whilst training.
Contact
· If the Supervisee feels it is necessary to contact the Supervisor with a concern outside the supervision sessions, the Supervisor will offer emergency support (e.g. in the case of suicidal clients, child protection issues or counsellor safety). It might be suggested that an additional supervision session is arranged. Mobile: 07970 362579
Accountability
· The Supervisor agrees to complete reports or references with respect to the Supervisee’s training or college. This will be done in consultation during or after sessions.
· Work of this nature will not be charged, however longer reports or analysis (e.g. BACP accreditation application) will be chargeable at an agreed fee.
Working Agreement
The Supervisor will:
· Commit to attend supervision.
· Ensure that you feel able to present your client work in a way that suits you.
· Ensure that the welfare of the client takes priority.
· Help you to meet the needs of your client by providing support and advice where necessary in terms of your own self-awareness and self-development.
· Challenge practice as deemed necessary. Challenging practice judged to be unethical in the client’s best interest.
· Have appropriate insurance cover for clinical supervision.
The Supervisee will:
· Commit to attend supervision.
· Prepare fully for each supervision session ensuring that any specific concerns and issues are addressed as a priority.
· Be open to feedback and be aware when it might be difficult to hear any challenges which could support client work.
· Use supervision as a supportive and constructive tool with which to enhance and develop client work and be open to discussion of the supervision relationship when there are difficulties.
· Abide by the BACP Ethical Framework
· Agree to review and evaluate work at regular intervals and consider professional development.
· Have appropriate insurance to cover all clinical practice and client work.
